Our Community

our-community-group

The efforts of our supporters has helped make the wetlands a place where waterbirds and wildlife now thrive. Its also a popular nature reserve where regular events are held for the local community.

The active, well-informed Friends have been part of the wetland management team since the wetlands’ values were first recognised by the local community. The Brixton Street Wetlands are an amazing place of local, state, national and world renown. It is for their botanical values rather than birds or wetland fauna that the wetlands have this astounding reputation.

2011-Brixton-Diary-(Subas)_15The Friends of Brixton Street group lead by Regina Drummond, regularly organise wildflower walks in the spring as well as performing rubbish cleanups and weed removal (several members of the group are qualified bush regenerators). They also publicise the values of the Wetlands and the Friend’s activities through displays in shopping centres, libraries and schools.

The Friends see their future role to ensure the long term preservation of:

  • The Southern Brown Bandicoot (Quenda) which is currently found in the area.
  • The claypans, flora and bird habitat and
  • Keeping the area as natural as possible and still use it to find calm and peace.

The Friends of Brixton St Wetlands are a member of the Urban Bushland Council.
